Götz Engelhardt was born in Hamburg in 1959 and received his first violin lessons at the age of 11. At the age of 15 he was accepted as a junior student at the Würzburg Academy of Music and at the same time switched to the viola. After finishing school, he studied music in Graz and Vienna with Prof. Hatto Beyerle.

Götz Engelhardt took part in master classes with Ulrich Koch, Kim Kashkashian and the "LaSalle Quartet", and also worked as a substitute with the ORF Symphony Orchestra and became a member of the Festival Orchestra of the "Arena di Verona" and the Orchestra of La Scala in Milan. In 1986 he became a member of the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn.
