Tutti: Social popularity
The audience heard the WKO's repertoire expand and rediscovered its social significance with the inclusion of thematic New Year concerts in its annual programme. New admirers heard the WKO at the Heilbronn Gaffenberg arts festival with comedian Dieter Hildebrandt, at the Jagsthausen Castle Festival, and accompanying the action at the theatre in Heilbronn, while audiences also experienced pioneering events such as the launch of the 'redblue meets Klassik' series on 16 November 2007 in the informal atmosphere of an alternative concert hall.
The orchestra embraced new ventures with for example 'Peter and the Wolf' marking the first of its concerts for school pupils and thrilling 2,800 children. Other 'young' target groups were reached by the youth recitals and educational concerts. And in 2007 the Harmonie festival hall was sold out for a special concert with American violinist Hilary Hahn.
Fresh horizons were opened up for the WKO by its first concert tour of eastern Germany in 2003, its first performance at Milan's Sala Verdi the following year, new appearances at festivals such as Dias de Música em Belém in Lisbon, La Folle Journée in Nantes, and in Bilbao and Tokyo, visiting performances at new destinations, and its participation in the Classical Music Gala Voyages on board the Germany, a legendary ship which was the star of its own television show.
