Duet: Encounters with soloists
Musical greats performed with the WKO. Every rehearsal with eminent musicians was like a master course for the ensemble. In 1965, the WKO embarked upon a string of successes by playing with Maurice André – someone who, like Anne-Sophie Mutter, Martha Argerich, James Galway, Julia Fischer, Mstislav Rostropovich and many others – would frequently return.
The WKO gave the people of Heilbronn the exclusive feeling of being the first to glimpse the future of music, including the likes of Rudolf Buchbinder, Frank Peter Zimmermann and Tabea Zimmermann. Even Christoph Eschenbach and Justus Frantz, already well-known pianists, would enjoy a rapid rise 'after Heilbronn'. And for many years, the ARD music competition heralded some genuine discoveries among the prizewinners.
