Counterpoint: Foundation on 6 November 1960
The response from the committee of the German Orchestral Association could be described as fortissimo: "Heilbronn's musical life would profit least of all from a chamber orchestra." But with the benefit of hindsight, it must be said that they hit entirely the wrong note. Jörg Faerber and concertmaster Rudolf Breitschmid proved that their tack of a chamber orchestra was viable and were joined by businessman Kurt Lichdi. And on 8 November 1960, music-lovers established the Heilbronn Orchestral Society. Public sponsors stumped up 30,000 Deutschmarks – enough to enable the ensemble to operate without grants or subsidies for three months.
